Summary

"Looking for your next big YA fantasy series? We've got our eye on this stylish blockbuster。" --Entertainment Weekly

Project Runway meets Mulan in this sweeping fantasy about a young girl who poses as a boy to compete for the role of imperial tailor and embarks on an impossible journey to sew three magic dresses from the sun, the moon, and the stars。

Maia Tamarin dreams of becoming the greatest tailor in the land, but as a girl, the best she can hope for is to marry well。 When a royal messenger summons her ailing father, once a tailor of renown, to court, Maia poses as a boy and takes his place。 She knows her life is forfeit if her secret is discovered, but she'll take that risk to achieve her dream and save her family from ruin。 There's just one catch: Maia is one of twelve tailors vying for the job。
Backstabbing and lies run rampant as the tailors compete in challenges to prove their artistry and skill。 Maia's task is further complicated when she draws the attention of the court magician, Edan, whose piercing eyes seem to see straight through her disguise。
And nothing can prepare her for the final challenge: to sew three magic gowns for the emperor's reluctant bride-to-be, from the laughter of the sun, the tears of the moon, and the blood of stars。 With this impossible task before her, she embarks on a journey to the far reaches of the kingdom, seeking the sun, the moon, and the stars and finding more than she ever could have imagined。
Steeped in Chinese culture, sizzling with forbidden romance, and shimmering with magic, this young adult fantasy is pitch-perfect for fans of Sarah J。 Maas or Rene Ahdieh。

"Spin the Dawn is proof that casting a wider net not only gives us a fresh story that feels unlike everything else on the shelves beside it but also allows for richer and more nuanced storytelling。" --NPR

"What an amazing creation! Every time I thought I knew where it was going, I was wrong。 This is a white-knuckle read。" --Tamora Pierce, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Tempests and Slaughter

Everyone says they didn't like this book because the second part wasn't what they were expecting, but I didn't mind that。。。。the thing was that the second part felt too fairy-tale-like and fake for me。 It felt like a children's book, like random worse things just kept on happening to up the conflict higher and higher。 And also the love story kinda went from 0 to 100 real fast which I didn't like; I'd have liked more middle ground between when they confessed their feelings and when they literally Everyone says they didn't like this book because the second part wasn't what they were expecting, but I didn't mind that。。。。the thing was that the second part felt too fairy-tale-like and fake for me。 It felt like a children's book, like random worse things just kept on happening to up the conflict higher and higher。 And also the love story kinda went from 0 to 100 real fast which I didn't like; I'd have liked more middle ground between when they confessed their feelings and when they literally confessed their LOVE。 Idk if I'll read the second book; I'm not really intrigued to learn more of the story because I'm not partially attached to the characters。 。。。more

I Really enjoyed this book, there is so much inspiration and girl power。I enjoyed the mulan type setting, it was very different to the type of fantasy I usually read, but it was really good。 Most of the time while reading it I felt as though I was right there, spectating it all。 Very well written。

The premise and concept of this book was very interesting, and I like Maia’s character development throughout the book, but the development of the other characters didn’t impress me as much。 The worldbuilding was pretty nice as well but the plot was a bit strange starting in part 2 and I thought the romance was too fast to truly evoke all the emotions it could have。 Overall this was a fun read。

Weaving an epic tale as intricate as embroidery, SPIN THE DAWN is a magic-infused, romantic fantasy that will enchant you。This is a strange five stars; I have obvious qualms with SPIN THE DAWN's execution but I cannot dispute Lim's ability to, ahem, spin a story as cosy and beautiful as this。Maia Tamarin, a seamstress in a world that scorns women, takes the place of her brother to compete for the position of tailor in the imperial household。 But winning comes at a great cost: to preserve a tenuo Weaving an epic tale as intricate as embroidery, SPIN THE DAWN is a magic-infused, romantic fantasy that will enchant you。This is a strange five stars; I have obvious qualms with SPIN THE DAWN's execution but I cannot dispute Lim's ability to, ahem, spin a story as cosy and beautiful as this。Maia Tamarin, a seamstress in a world that scorns women, takes the place of her brother to compete for the position of tailor in the imperial household。 But winning comes at a great cost: to preserve a tenuous peace the kingdom of A'landi has not seen in years, Maia must sew the legendary dresses for the future empress, of the sun, moon, and stars, before her own secrets threaten to come to light。。。My summary makes it sound rather linear, but in actuality isn't。 SPIN THE DAWN approaches its story with an unusual two-for-the-price-of-one perspective。 What starts as a cutthroat competition where no one is to be trusted and everything is to be lost, quickly turns into a world-traversing journey to retrieve three magical artefacts that will test the mettle of the unlikely heroine and her mysterious companion。 Both are about equal in parts, and though I think overall the story was executed well, the abbreviation of the competition left me sadly wanting。 It, in itself, could've been an entire book; the blurb is misleading in that the sewing the legendary dresses is considered the final task of the competition, when in reality the competition is over by that point。 We do get to meet the other competitors, explore the palace in depth and see the real hardship Maia undergoes as a tailor, but my expectations from the blurb was for a competition, so I was expecting and wanting competition and was disappointed when we moved on so quickly。 As I said, however, Lim does a brilliant job telling even what I would consider a condensed version of the story, so in this case it was about managing my own expectations rather than a reflection of the storytelling itself。The journey was slower-paced and less exciting but did explore the intriguing love interest of the Lord Enchanter magician, Edan。 Maia, as a character, was well-written albeit generic, but I did enjoy Edan and their relationship dynamic together。 They have good chemistry together and develop slowly and surely, but there is the potential sketchiness of his immortal, circa 500 years old self getting together with Maia's freshly-minted eighteen years of life。 It reminded me of SJM's unsavoury ancient hot fae warriors with their scrawny barely-in-college female love interests。 Personally it wasn't as grotesque in execution as the SJM relationships so I didn't mind it so much, but your mileage may vary。Pacing and characters aside, Lim builds a beautiful world suffused with Asian influence。 I very much enjoyed learning the folklore and culture of A'landi and beyond, the deep dive into the sweltering desert and freezing moonlit bays。 Maia is confronted by bandits, demons, ghosts of old, and it is cast in vivid display whilst still being pacey and quick enough to enjoy。 The overall tapestry of SPIN THE DAWN is a vibrant, magical story sure to spin you around its pinkie finger as easily as thread。 WILL I READ ON? We learn a lot about Maia and her morals during it。 The second half of the book is the magical quest。 I equally enjoyed this part, because Maia learns a lot about herself during it。 I loved Elizabeth Lim's writing style, she is very good at making Maia a three dimensional character in first person while also crafting an interesting story。 I am generally partial to anything cloaked in mythology, celestial objects, and "impossible" quests。 I love seeing how Lim spun a tale of all three with a goddess and dresses fabricated from intangible elements such as laughter from the sunlight, tears from the moon, and blood from the stars。 The creativity of such a plot was immersive to me, and I blazed through the story as if I was on the quest with them。 As for the romantic subplot, I may have fallen in love with the love interest before even Maia did in the story。 I think he's been generalized as Howl Pendragon meets the Darkling, but I only see the resemblance in the fact that he's attractive, magical, and a few hundred years old。 Now, the 'youthful-in-appearance-but-very-old male character falls in love with a 16-20 year old female character' trope often makes me uncomfortable。 I hate it, actually。 But this relationship gets a pass from me because Lim writes it well。 The love interest is written as an equal to Maia, and he doesn't harbor evil intentions or manipulative tendencies (unlike the Darkling)。 In my opinion, he's very likeable (and dreamy!) Overall my opinions of the first book feel biased just because I loved it so。 Regardless, I'd encourage you to pick it up if the synopsis interested you as it did to me。 I never regretted doing so。 Happy reading! 。。。more

I appreciate the inclusion of other cultures and types of stories in the YA/Fantasy genres and that was the most exciting part of this story。 The first half was an Asian empire inspired Project Runway/Mulan story。 That's what got me excited but then it became more of a journey story which is fine but less unique。 The writing was pretty good, excelling in imagery but a little immature and I felt it glossed over complicated subject matter。 Overall decent and entertaining。 I appreciate the inclusion of other cultures and types of stories in the YA/Fantasy genres and that was the most exciting part of this story。 The first half was an Asian empire inspired Project Runway/Mulan story。 That's what got me excited but then it became more of a journey story which is fine but less unique。 The writing was pretty good, excelling in imagery but a little immature and I felt it glossed over complicated subject matter。 Overall decent and entertaining。 。。。more

There are just so many things to love about this book; while I wished there could have been more world building (I love me some heavy world-building), I am still in love with the story as a whole。 Maia and Eden had very realistic and entertaining personalities, especially when they were together。 I LOVE THEM, OKAY! Maia is such a strong character, and I don't mean she can punch things, but she isn't easily swayed from her ideals and morals。 She pursues what her heart dictates even when it might not be the most logical path; she'd do anything to protect those she is loyal to。 Edan is the emperor's enchanter, and much like a genie, must follow his master's orders and serve his oath。 He is so sweet and loyal and a bit of a sad boy who needs a hug。 I also adored that he also had his own dreams and was willing to fight for them。Some might think that Maia and Edan's romance might have been a bit instalove-y I actually did not mind it。 I have read more intense instalove stories out there, which is nowhere as instant as those。 Maia and Edan brought out the best in one another and empowered each other to be strong in their own way。 Their romantic scenes really touched my heart, and all I want is their eternal happiness。 ALSO, THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS HEALTHY。 AAAAH。 I can't stress this enough。 In fantasy, most male protagonists are cruel to their love interest, but not Edan。 While he was mysterious and kept secrets, they were all later revealed as he and Maia grew closer。
I absolutely loved this book and recommend it to anyone looking for a light and easy to read fantasy。 It's full of magic, diabolical beings and strong family bonds。 Full of exciting plots and well-executed twists, this book will take your breath away。Thank you to Hachette Australia for providing a review copy of this novel in exchange for a review。 All opinions and thoughts are my own。 。。。more

Thank you to Netgalley and Hodder and Stoughton for providing me with an eArc of this book in exchange for an honest review。This book captivated me from the very beginning and kept my interest all the way through。I've read several books set in China and this one stood out among the rest of them with Maia。 I thought it was great that out of her parents children (Maia being the only girl) Maia was the strong one and I certainly got that from the story。This book was well written and the world build Thank you to Netgalley and Hodder and Stoughton for providing me with an eArc of this book in exchange for an honest review。This book captivated me from the very beginning and kept my interest all the way through。I've read several books set in China and this one stood out among the rest of them with Maia。 I thought it was great that out of her parents children (Maia being the only girl) Maia was the strong one and I certainly got that from the story。This book was well written and the world building was phenomenal。 I will definitely be reading more of this author 。。。more

3。8/5I liked it, despite the "i'm-a-man-yes-i-am" ruse not being long enough, esp。 for the love interest (not bi enough, like an icon and legend Captain Li Shang) and the whole I luv u happening a bit too early。 It would be more fun if it ended up at least as slow burning as Mulan(1998)。But i guess you can't win with the perfection。 3。8/5I liked it, despite the "i'm-a-man-yes-i-am" ruse not being long enough, esp。 for the love interest (not bi enough, like an icon and legend Captain Li Shang) and the whole I luv u happening a bit too early。 It would be more fun if it ended up at least as slow burning as Mulan(1998)。But i guess you can't win with the perfection。 。。。more
